The notion of a "canon" of texts for Buddhism is dicey at best. There are at least four major collections of texts that are considered central for various groups of Buddhists. It has been eye opening for us to learn that a large number of these texts have not been translated into any western language. With the publication of "Buddhist Literature," editor-in-chief Jan Nattier seeks to make new translations available for both teachers and students of Buddhism. This annual journal is priced very reasonably, and Nattier specifically states that those subscribers to the journal can freely use the translations for classroom distribution. This is a journal for those with a significant background in Buddhism. Each translated portion of text is preceded by lucid introductions that contextualize the literature; texts are followed by a wealth of citations and notes. Those not interested in the details of grammar and syntax can easily skip them. For scholars and students interested in such details, it is readily available.
